Benny Bufano

Beniamino “Benny” Bufano was born in Italy in 1898. He moved to San Francisco in 1915 to work with the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Later in life he settled permamently in the Bay area.

The photograph below is a wonderful example of how the Examiner staff would “paint” around some portraits, so that the image would pop out, or appear framed, in the newspaper.

I especially love the image below. Mr. Bufano is working in an art studio, with one of his giant sculptures watching over him. The angle at which this sculpture stands, and its downward glance, give the impression that it is a silent, patient friend.
